I thought that the movie "Ray" was very similar to his actual life. Some of the differences that I noticed are that it never showed Ray's first wife or all of his 12 children in the movie. Also it never said why they shortened his name to just Ray Charles and dropped the Robinson...(i don't think it gave a reason in the movie)...because when i read it in the biography, it says to avoid confusion with Sugar Ray Robinson the boxer. I found that very interesting. Everything in the movie seems to of actually happened. It just would of been too long if they added every detail of Ray Charles' life. I thought that "Ray" was a great movie and showed the ups and downs of Ray's life wonderfully.
In the movie "Ray" his father really wasn't mentioned, but the biography says that his father died after his mother. They weren't married, and his mother was left to raise the children by herself. Another contrast was Ray's actual name. In the movie they changed his name to make it sound cooler, but the real reason was because Ray Robinson could be confused with a famous boxer. Other than that the movie and the biography go hand in hand. I think that the producers did a very good job displaying the movie as his life had been.
Ray Charles Robinson's life was portrayed very well with the movie "Ray." The movie did not show all of his children, but how could they? I liked how the movie showed not only the good in his life but the bad because his life had both. I'm glad they showed how he never touched the stuff after he quit. I wish the movie would have shown more of him after he quit heroin because the biography shows many important events happened after he quit other than singing in Georgia. With Ray Charles actually helping make the movie, it is no wonder they portrayed his life perfectly.
The movie "Ray" showed how his life and how he was addicted to Heroin. However, the movie did not cover the fact that he had 12 children. He also gave each of his children 1,000,000 dollars when he died. Also the biography talked about his mother and father and how they were never married, which was never covered in the movie. Yet, the movie showed how he was unfaithful to his wife throughout his music career. Also, the movie covered his life through his heroin addiction and the prime of his music career, and never really showed what happened afterwards.
The movie deciphered Ray Charles life very well. It highlighted his musical career and revealed his addiction to heroin. Although it didnt show everything, (like his nympho -like lifestyle) it definitely broadened my horizons about his life. I now have a heightened respect for his musical career and now know his difficult background.
The song, "Georgia on my Mind" is awesome. Georgia seems like a cool place to have that as a state song!!!
I thought the movie "Ray" was a very good representation of Ray Charles Robinson's life. Almost every aspect of his life was in the movie. Although the movie did not show all of his children, but that would probably make the movie very long. I really liked how they showed what really happened when he stopped using heroin. The struggles Ray Charles faced while trying to change music was huge, but he got through it and brought in rock 'n roll. Ray Charles actually helped make the movie, so it is no wonder why it had so many accurate events.
The movie "Ray" showed the life of Ray Charles Robinson's life from beginning to end very well. Some things that were different from his real life than what was shown in the movie was how he got blind and it did not do a very good job of explaining either. Next thing that was not shown well was how big of a "player" Robison really was. He had many children by multiple women in reality, but in the movie it showed only two women and three children. The movie did show his Heroin addiction quite well. It also showed the conflict between him and the state of Georgie very well also. Robinson was banned from playing in Georgie because he would not play segregated shows and later on Georgia fixed their wrong doing by making "Georgia on My Mind" their state song.
1) What did you learn about Ray Charles and his life as a musician that was interesting to you?
Even though Ray was blind, it never stopped him from his dreams of becoming a musician. His music blossomed into others genres of music. Rock and R&B emerged thanks to Ray Charles.
2) How accurate do you think the movie "Ray" was in the relation to this biography article?
Very accurate, I already knew most of the information provided in the article.
3) Do you believe that Ray Charles changed music?
Yes I do, when Ray started mixing blues, gospel, and jazz.
4) Do you think his experiences as a musician are similar or different to todays musicians? How?
Similar in the littlest ways. Ray and other musicians of the time were living in a time of segregation and other life challenges. They had to work harder back then to make differences. People today are not as crative.
5) If Ray was still alive and you had the opportunity to interview him, what would you ask?
Why he did not respect women? What happened to his father? Why did he choose drugs over his family?
The movie about Ray Charles, I believe, was very accurate to his life. I found it interesting how he lived a double life. I found it amazing how he was able to compose his ground breaking music while doing drugs and having tons of kids. I believe Ray changed the way we looked at music because he started the transfer from jazz to rock. His life style is similar to the composers of the new age. He was under drug influences and lived a life that was harmful to himself. In the mist of all that happened to him personally he still changed the history of music. If I could ask him one question I would ask him to play a song preferably (Hit the Road Jack).
